If you’re looking to get a good sense of what Edward Gorey‘s art and writing is all about, then this book is for you. Amphigorey collects fifteen of Edward Gorey’s stories into a single 192 page book. It even includes popular stories that were released on their own hardbound editions.
There are a few downsides to getting this book though. (1) The printing and page quality could be better. (2) Since Gorey’s artwork switches from portrait to landscape layout, sometimes you’d have to flip the book sideways to read the text. I wish the had fixed this simple issue.
But if your goal is to simply read Gorey and look at the art, then this is a good investment since it’s fairy cheap and comes with a good selection of stories. You can always buy the individual hard bound books later.
This book includes: The Unstrung Harp, The Listing Attic, The Doubtful Guest, The Object-Lesson, The Bug Book, The Fatal Lozenge, The Hapless Child, The Curious Sofa, The Willowdale Handcar, The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Insect God, The West Wing, The Wuggly Ump, The Sinking Spell, The Remembered Visit.
